Why back-pressure turbines suit process industries

The exhaust steam is not wasted in a condenser: it leaves the turbine at the pressure the process needs and is used for heating, drying, evaporation or cooking. Because the heat is put to work, overall fuel utilisation is high.

What to know before specifying

  • Electrical output follows the heat load. If process demand falls, output falls with it.
  • A bypass or pressure-reducing station protects the process when the turbine is out of service.
  • Inlet and exhaust parameters decide the achievable power for a given steam flow — higher inlet pressure and temperature give more power per tonne of steam.
  • Where heat demand is variable, an extraction-condensing machine can be a better choice.

Typical applications

  • Bagasse cogeneration in sugar mills
  • Palm oil mill biomass plants
  • Paper and pulp mills
  • Wood-processing plants and sawmills
  • Food and chemical plants with process steam
  • District heating networks

What we need to quote

Send these parameters and we will propose a configuration:

  • Steam flow (t/h) and inlet pressure / temperature at the turbine inlet
  • Back-pressure or exhaust pressure, or condenser conditions and cooling-water temperature
  • Required electrical output (kW / MW) and grid frequency (50 Hz / 60 Hz)
  • Extraction (process steam) pressure and flow, if any
  • Fuel type and site altitude / ambient conditions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between back-pressure and condensing turbines?

A condensing turbine exhausts to a vacuum condenser to maximise power. A back-pressure turbine exhausts at a higher pressure and passes that steam to a process, so most of the remaining heat is used instead of rejected.

Can one turbine supply two process steam levels?

Yes, an extraction back-pressure turbine can provide steam at an intermediate pressure as well as at the exhaust.

How is output controlled when process demand changes?

The governing system regulates inlet steam flow. For variable heat demand we can discuss extraction or condensing options with you.

Do you also supply the generator and controls?

Yes. We supply the turbine-generator set with auxiliaries and control equipment, or individual components for retrofit.
