How a biomass steam turbine is selected

A biomass power plant burns agricultural or forestry residue in a boiler, and the steam drives the turbine. The right turbine depends first on what the plant needs: electricity only, or electricity plus process steam.

  • Back-pressure turbine — exhaust steam goes to the process. Highest total energy use when there is steady heat demand (sugar, paper, palm oil, wood processing).
  • Extraction back-pressure — takes steam at one or more intermediate pressures for different process users.
  • Condensing / extraction-condensing — maximises electrical output and lets the plant keep generating when process demand drops, for example in an off-season.

Biomass-specific design points

  • Steam parameters set by the boiler: biomass boilers usually run at lower pressure and temperature than large coal units, so turbine efficiency is matched to those conditions.
  • Fuel moisture and heating value change the available steam flow through the year, so the turbine and governing system should tolerate part-load operation.
  • Steam quality and corrosion: fuels with high chlorine or alkali content call for attention to steam purity and material selection.
  • Cooling-water availability decides whether condensing operation is practical at the site.

What we need to quote

Send these parameters and we will propose a configuration:

  • Steam flow (t/h) and inlet pressure / temperature at the turbine inlet
  • Back-pressure or exhaust pressure, or condenser conditions and cooling-water temperature
  • Required electrical output (kW / MW) and grid frequency (50 Hz / 60 Hz)
  • Extraction (process steam) pressure and flow, if any
  • Fuel type and site altitude / ambient conditions

Retrofit and spare parts

We also supply replacement rotors, blades, diaphragms, gland seals and governing equipment for existing biomass and thermal units, so an ageing machine can be refurbished without replacing the whole plant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What power sizes do you supply for biomass plants?

Industrial and independent biomass plants up to the 50 MW class. Send your steam flow and parameters and we will confirm the best-fit machine.

Back-pressure or condensing — which should I choose?

If the plant has steady heat demand, a back-pressure or extraction machine usually makes the best use of the fuel. If power export is the goal, or heat demand is seasonal, a condensing or extraction-condensing machine gives more flexibility.

Can you match our existing boiler?

Yes. The turbine is designed around your boiler steam flow, pressure and temperature, and the process or condenser requirement.

Do you hold quality certifications?

Yes. Our quality management system is ISO certified and our equipment carries CE certification. Contact us for certificate copies.

Do you support overseas projects?

Yes. We deliver internationally and provide commissioning guidance, spare parts and service engineers for overseas sites.
